I just leased a 2024 Subaru Outback. This is the third in a row from Downtown Subaru of Oakland. The reason I keep coming back (other than the fact that I love the Outback and it is a perfect fit for my life and family) is down to the Sales Manager Terry Rowan. Terry is a gentleman. He is very calm, understands his customer, and doesn't try to apply pressure to rush into unwanted choices. When I've interacted with other sales people at other dealerships (I do shop around each time it comes to getting a new car!) I'm left with the feeling that I am being manipulated. That has never been the case at Downtown Subaru with Terry. Each time I have got the car I wanted and felt like I have made a good deal. I was actually looking forward to going in this time and I left happy. Thanks, Terry! And well done to Downtown Subaru of Oakland for being able to retain such quality people! Oh, and the Outback is perfect!

As soon as I learned my break/tail lights were out, I went to the dealership as a matter of convenience, in an attempt to avoid delays with ordering parts, etc. I requested to have the mechanic change my oil and rotate my tires while there. I was told all fluids would be topped off as part of the oil change service. After several hours, I was given the following summary: "all 4 brake lamps in rear of vehicle in op due to wiring harness rusting out...P&A generated for both lamp housings and trunk housing including bulbs and harness for trunk hatch. Cost for repair $1,816.53." I trusted the technician when he told me they attempted to replace the bulbs but they were rusted shut into their sockets. Because I couldn't afford to pay $2k that day to replace the entire electrical system—including the trunk hatch which was operating fine—they stated that my car was unsafe to operate and I needed to tow it off the lot. I decided to look into changing the lights myself. After consulting the car's manual for 2 minutes, I realized I was more than capable. I bought all bulbs from an auto parts shop ($15 total) and managed to change every one of them. Granted, one socket contained a fair amount of rust, but with a little pressure and the appropriate tools, I was able to remove the burnt out bulb. I applied an over-the-counter anti-rusting substance ($1.79) for good measure. There is absolutely no reason a few broken bulbs warranted a complete overhaul of the system and rendered my car useless. The least they could have done was replace the bulbs in the sockets that were so easy to remove and contained absolutely no rust (pictured). I was charged $235 for the lights evaluation alone. To add insult to injury, they didn't even fill up my wiper fluid! All-in-all I paid $368.99 essentially for an oil change (that they didn’t even meet their promises on) and tire rotation. Can't help but feel like this happened because I’m a woman.

Terrible experience with the salesperson on 12/19/23. He was opaque, arrogant, and used all the phrases he was likely taught would work to close the sale. I told him exactly what I needed and he talked his way around providing the information (information I was given at two other dealerships). When the “customer service manager” called me to see if I had bought a car yet, he hung up on me when I told him I bought a car but had some comments how he might have improved my experience.” By contrast, I had the best car buying experience I have ever had across the bay.

1.0 star rating 9/25/2023 This is THE typical slimy car dealer you have heard so many stories about. I called about a vehicle and inquired on pricing. I had informed whoever answered the phone about a deal in writing from another, albeit much farther away dealer and asked if they could match that. The person on the phone was emphatic about their ability to match or come near competitor's prices, so I made the trip from Santa Rosa on my only day off. I got there and everything fell apart. It really took a nosedive when the "finance manager" came over and told me he "had been offered more than that" on the vehicle. Either you are lying to me, or someone was not serious and/or qualified enough to purchase it. Why else would you not take that supposed higher offer? I'm not in the business of starting a bidding war, and I hate having my time wasted. I made about a 3 hour round trip with fuel and toll costs to be there 15 minutes and have such a dismal experience. I'll take my business to Santa Cruz Toyota. It may be a 5-6+ hour round trip, but at least they will honor their word on pricing.

Very poor sales practices. They tried to strong arm me into making a bad deal on a WRX. I walked away as the sales manager crumpled up my paperwork and threw it on the ground in anger. He then stormed away from his desk. Also, dont be fooled. You can take off all of the markups. For my deal, I said I wouldn't even look at the car if I had to pay for any markups/ dealer added options. They immediately said they would take them off after I held my ground and during final negotiations they were gone. It still was a bad deal with a bad dealership. Definitely glad I walked away and ended up buying my car from Shingle Springs Subaru. Shingle Springs Subaru was the complete opposite of Subaru Oakland.
